The Word of God invites us this Fifth Sunday of Lent to be totally authentic Christians, to take advantage of all the power God places at our disposal to remain cleansed of the corruption that in this world seems to envelop us until it suffocates us. We see this corruption seeping into all levels of society, into the governments of nations, and sadly, we must admit, even into members of the Church itself. However, we have Christ's promise that the Church will never be completely invaded by corruption because Christ placed in the Church's DNA the seed of Eternal Life that drives her toward the Resurrection. But we all must take very special care not to be infected. We see that Saint Paul gives us the example of his treasure, which is his personal relationship with Christ, and that this is the New Thing that the prophet Isaiah urges us to notice in our lives as a personal and loving act of God for us.
In the Gospel, we see how the Pharisees, already touched by corruption, manipulate the Scriptures to tempt Christ, just as the Devil did. According to them, they quote Scripture but are not faithful. We can see this in Leviticus 20:10 and Deuteronomy 22:22, where we clearly see that he is not referring only to the women but to the two adulterers. Jesus somehow points this out to them with what he writes with his finger in the ground, and together with his words, everyone abandons him. There we see the mercy of God, who does not break the law but respects it for the benefit of the sinner, not to condemn him. Jesus releases her, not so she can continue doing what she wants, but so that she will sin no more.
